Africa Day

Hello everyone

Happy Africa Day!!

Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world. The organisation was transformed into the African Union on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May. Africa Day is intended to celebrate and acknowledge the successes of the Organisation of African Unity(OAU now the AU) from its creation on May 1963 in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the progress that Africa has made while reflecting upon the common challenges that the continent faces in a global environment.

This year Africa Day will be celebrated under the theme: SilencingTheGuns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against COVID-19 Pandemic. It is important for African countries to come together to fight against corona virus. Each one needs to play a role in fighting against this virus, by making sure that they comply with all the COVID-19 regulations and practicing social distance. Please also use this day as an opportunity to also learn more about African countries.

As you all know we are currently running a competition for Africa Day, please note the closing date is 31 May 2021. So make sure you submit in time so that your submission can be considered.

If you have any question about the Africa Day competition, please contact Nasiphi(yklnas001@myuct.ac.za).

The RADC will be having a webinar for Africa month that focuses on celebrating diversity and community in UCT Residence Life.

Environmental Awareness

Hi Fullerites,

This is just a reminder to please dispose of your waste correctly. If possible please use the recycling bins next to the dining hall (for more details about how to recycle you can contact me at mnclay001@myuct.ac.za). Also when using the black bins please ensure that you close the bins so that the wind does not blow waste around.

I would also like to ask that when there are events where food will be provided, you please bring your own crockery and cutlery (if possible) so that we can cut down on waste production. Let's keep Fuller Hall clean and sustainable together.

Green regards,

Laylaa Manack

GCI representative
