About

A little bit of history...

Fuller Hall is named after Mrs Barnard Fuller. She was born in Cape Town in 1869 and named Maria Emmeline Buchanan. Mrs Barnard Fuller was one of the first four women students to enrol at the South African College (now known as UCT) in 1886 for her matriculates and teachers certificate. Fuller Hall was opened in 1928 as a women's residence. The first name it was given is Arthur's Seat. It was renamed Fuller Hall in 1950 in recognition of Fuller's contributions to UCT. In the very same year, UCT awarded Fuller with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws.

Maria was also the founder and first president of the National Council of Women. She dedicated her life to promoting education and the enfranchisement of women. She was awarded the George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935 for 40 years of public service. Mrs Barnard Fuller passed on in 1957.

Fuller Hall today!

Fuller Hall's motto is Grace et Sagesse, which directly translates into Grace and Wisdom from the French language. The other principles that Fuller Hall's foundation is built upon are Academic Excellence and Integrity. It is our hope that every Fullerite will live by these principles during their time at Fuller Hall and well into their lives once they have left.

Fuller Hall aims to be a safe place for all students. It is the ultimate home away from home! All students are encouraged to live boldly and fiercely embrace their individuality. Fuller Hall is a space whereby the academic and personal wellbeing of students is prioritised. During their time at Fuller Hall, students should be able to achieve academic excellence and develop as human being who forms an important part of society.
