FREEDOM DAY

Hello everyone

Happy Freedom Day!!

I hope that you are all doing well today and are enjoying this memorable holiday. Freedom Day is not any ordinary day, it is a day that reminds our grandparents and parents of the first day they all got a chance to vote for their first time in 1994. Freedom Day is a public holiday celebrated in South Africa every year. It's an important day in the country's history and to this day offers a time for reflection. Freedom Day is celebrated on 27 April in South Africa. The day is in honour of the country’s first democratic elections. These were the first post-apartheid national elections to be held in South African where anyone could vote regardless of race.

You have the right to vote, so please make the most of it. South Africa has a proportional representation system, which means that the more votes a party gets, the more seats they will get in parliament. Every vote counts! Our country has come a long way – the lives that have been lost in the fight for our democracy and the right to vote cannot be ignored, and we owe it to those who struggled for our country’s freedom to cast our vote and ensure that our democracy stays alive and strong.

It is important to take part in the voting process because:

· Casting your vote allows you to express your opinion on who you think should govern

· Voting means that you believe in the democratic process and will participate in it to represent your right to freedom of speech

· Showing that you care with your vote tells candidates that they must be accountable to the public

· Showing up at the poll on voting day sets a good example to others

· Finally, taking time to vote reflects pride in your nation. You can play a part in defining a government that you can be proud of. Let everyone know that you care enough about our country and its leaders to have a say in the election’s outcome.

Remember, we all have a right to vote. So make sure you exercise your right by taking part in any voting process. You will also get a chance to vote for the house committee 2022 later in the year and you exercised your right when you were electing the class rep of your certain courses. The next Official National Elections will be on the 27th October 2021. During that time we will have a mock election so you can be better prepared before you go to a voting station.

Here is a link that leads to a short video that explains the voting process and what happens in a voting station:
